Gigantic area
With so many annual visitors, it’s no surprise that Disney World is gigantic. But the area of the amusement park and the hotels in the area will surprise you. Did you know that Disney World’s territory is twice the size of the island Manhattan? Much of the area, however, is a protected nature reserve, as Walt Disney wanted it to be. It is very special that in the middle of this green environment there is not a single mosquito in sight.
Special fragrance
Disney World is committed to providing visitors with an unforgettable experience. There are always trash cans within reach and special air atomizers make the environment smell like vanilla or freshly baked cookies. Millions of flowers grow in the park and employees have their own secret walking routes so that they only meet visitors in their Disney uniform. You can say that the designers of the park do their utmost to give the park a touch of magic. To banish mosquitoes from the park for good, Disney engaged an expert, Major General William Potter, as early as the 1960s.
Expert advice
Potter had been involved with the effort to keep mosquitoes away from the Panama Canal area. He could later use the knowledge he gained from this project to make get rid of the insects at Disney World. Potter’s strategy? Prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs in the environment. Because the fewer the eggs, the less bloodthirsty adult mosquitoes will fly around later!
Smart tricks
Mosquitoes normally lay their eggs in standing water. That is why you will not encounter any standing water anywhere in Disney World. Waterfalls, flowing streams or spectacular fountains are possible – as long as the water is constantly moving. Potter also ensured excellent water drainage in the park, so that there are never too many damp patches of ground where mosquitoes can do their thing. Even all buildings and statues have taken rainwater into account. They are designed in such a way that the water slides off immediately and does not form puddles. What a job!
Garlic Spray
Despite all these tricks, mosquitoes sometimes manage to sneak into the park. They will then be removed immediately, but don’t expect any pesticides. It was Walt Disney’s wish to keep his dream park as natural as possible. If a mosquito infestation threatens to break out, the employees spray a special garlic spray. Mosquitoes hate the smell of garlic and will quickly look for another home. But don’t expect the air in the park to smell like an Italian restaurant because of that. The amount of garlic used in the spray is so small that visitors will not notice the smell.
