“She looks terrified,” says Thomas Markle
As the new Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle has a lot on her plate all of a sudden. She’s not allowed to wear whatever she wants anymore, she can no longer voice her political ideas and there are even some types of food she isn’t allowed to eat any longer. These are just some of the many rules Meghan has to abide by. Although it seems like Harry’s wife is adapting to her new life as a royal pretty smoothly, this is all fake according to her father.
Thomas Markle thinks his daughter looks terrified.
Not a sincere smile
On Saturday July 14, Meghan attended Wimbledon together with her sister-in-law Kate Middleton to cheer on her friend Serena Williams. Although photos show the duchess with a big smile on her face, they set off alarm bells with her father Thomas. He suspects it’s all fake: “I think she’s terrified,” he said in an interview with The Sun. Thomas claims that his daughter is having a very hard time adjusting to her new, royal obligations. He bases this on having seen her smile, which he thinks is fake: “I think she’s terrified. I see it in her eyes, I see it in her face and I see it in her smile. I’ve seen her smile for years. I know her smile. I don’t like the one I’m seeing now. This is a pained smile.” That’s why Thomas worries a lot about his daughter. He thinks she’s under a lot of pressure as well. “There’s a high price to pay to be married to that family.”
Critical
Thomas Markle is pretty critical about the royal family’s habits and traditions and thinks they are very old-fashioned. He thinks the rule that the royal women should always wear clothes that cover the knees is ridiculous. “Meghan seems like something out of an old movie. Why in 2018 are we dressing like the 1930s?”
Bad relationship
Thomas didn’t speak to his daughter very often before the wedding, but the 73-year-old says he has even less contact with her now. Apparently, Meghan doesn’t answer his calls anymore. “I had a heart attack… I could actually die soon. Does she want this to be the last thing we’ve said to each other? I’d like to put our differences behind us and get together. I miss her very much.”

This is not the first time Thomas Markle talks elaborately to the press. When he was on Good Morning Britain, the father of the Duchess of Sussex spilled the beans on Harry asking him for Meghan’s hand, his health and his relationship with the royal family. Thomas’s statements caused a lot of fuss, as did the fact that he paid a paparazzo to take so called spontaneous pictures of him a few days before the royal wedding.
