17. Machu Picchu (Peru)
These 15th-century Inca ruins were abandoned in the 16th century and rediscovered in 1866. It’s located in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, 2,430m above sea-level. The hike up to the city ruins takes four days, but you can get there faster by train. High in the slopes of the Andes, it’s one of the most breathtaking reminders of the Inca Empire.
