16. Petra (Jordan)
Petra, which was originally known to its inhabitants as Raqmu, is a historical city in Jordan which is carved into the side of a sandstone hill. The area surrounding it has been inhabited since 7000BC. It is located in a rugged, mountainous desert area and most likely began as a temple. It was forgotten for hundreds of years, but rediscovered in the early 1800s by a European traveler.
