In danger
Daniël looked at her with a funny glance in his eyes: “Is there something wrong?”. She had to think quickly, what should she do? In some sort of panic reaction, she said: “Oh, I’m just calling my mom”.
On the other side of the line, it was quiet for a second. Then the police officer who clearly overheard their conversation, asked her: “Are you in danger?”. Emma didn’t know what to say to him. In the past, she would wholeheartedly say no, but in those years she wouldn’t even have this conversation. Those were the years when she didn’t know this terrifying secret of Daniël and everything seemed like a perfect fairytale. If someone then told her that she was going to hand Daniël over to the police, she would never believe it, but here she was, calling the police. “Madam?”, it sounded on the other side of the line. Emma looked at Daniël who looked at her with an inquiring glance. Then in a blink of a second, she said: “Yes”.
