Emotional: A Sri Lankan mother finds her son 16 years after a tsunami

Reunion

“I searched for my son for years but couldn’t find him. I made an appeal to the president and asked the police for help”, the woman says to reporters. Eventually the mother was informed that her son had been adopted and seeking contact with the family. After a DNA test revealed that the boy, now 21, was in fact her son, the mother and son were reunited.

This emotional photograph shows the mother and her long sought-after son:

230,000 deaths

The tsunami was one of the worst natural disasters ever. There were more than 38,000 deaths in Sri Lanka and severe destruction of coastal villages in the eastern, southern, and western provinces. In all of Southeast Asia, an approximated 230,000 people lost their lives.
