The vast, mountainous areas of wilderness surrounding Jasper City are full of American chestnut trees. These trees are an important source of income for the inhabitants of the town, because of their economic value. The trees grow a lot faster than other hardwood trees like the oak. This results in trees that mature faster so they can be chopped down.
Although a fungal infection in the 20th century threatened to wipe out this tree species, the American chestnut tree has now fully recovered. You can find them in North American regions like Tennessee, Alabama, Nova Scotia, New Hampshire and Georgia. It is a beautiful tree species with many unique characteristics.
But one of these chestnuts turned out to be very special…
