Peter’s reply echoed from the well, “Got it! Here comes the first one!” Hana watched with bated breath as a small furry creature emerged from the darkness, clutched gently in Peter’s hands. He had created a makeshift sling out of his jacket to carry them up. As Peter drew closer, Hana reached down and lifted the frightened animal to safety.
“You’re okay now, little guy,” she whispered. Hana created a warm, soft area for the animals to recover. One by one, more emerged from the well as Peter made trip after trip down the rope. Each time Peter ascended, muscles straining, Hana’s nerves jangled. But the rope held fast. With each creature rescued, Hana felt a swell of relief.
