“I… I,” he stuttered, his eyes scanning the crowd for a sympathetic face, someone who might believe the thoughts he’d been carrying for so long. But how could he explain? How could he tell them that his dad’s death, the loss of their friend, colleague, and loved one, possibly wasn’t just an accident?
Suddenly, Susan placed her hands on his shoulders. “Jason is going through a lot,” she paused, “We all are,” and then she lowered her gaze. “Please forgive him for causing a scene. It’s just really tough for him right now,” she added in a voice that was meant to sound caring. But to Jason, it didn’t come across as genuine at all.
