Coming down with a cold? Vicks VapoRub can help you breathe a bit easier. But did you know that you can use the menthol ointment for a number of other things?
There’s quite a few cleaning, gardening, and kitchen supplies that can be used for purposes other than the one first intended. Udder ointment is just one example of this. And then there’s nail polish remover and even cola. This popular drink can be used to clean a number of things. On top of all that, there’s Vicks VapoRub. Most people use the menthol ointment to clear up their colds, but it can be used for other purposes as well.
Muscle pain
VapoRub isn’t only good for your airways, it can also alleviate muscle pain. According to the National Institute of Health, menthol is an effective painkiller. Physicians from the Mayo Clinic also swear by it. According to them, menthol has a cooling property. You can therefore put the menthol ointment on your skin to help cool down aching muscles.
Treating fungal nails
Dealing with fungal nails? Vicks VapoRub may be able to offer you a solution. A 2011 research showed that Vicks VapoRub helped fight off the fungal infection. For the study, 18 people with fungal nails put the ointment on their own nails for 48 weeks. 5 participants had been completely rid of their ailment, 10 saw significant improvement, and 5 didn’t see any change.
Stretch marks
Many people have stretch marks, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. But some people would rather get rid of them. While there’s no actual evidence of VapoRub helping get rid of these so-called tiger stripes, it’s often used to get rid of them. But even if it doesn’t work, it’s not causing any damage.
