You could repair the windshield on your car yourself with this trick
We’ve probably all been there before: you’re driving on the highway and then out of nowhere a pebble comes flying and leaves a nasty crack in your windshield. That small crack might still be a small problem at that moment, but you know that when you leave it there it will only get bigger and bigger.
With these handy tips, you might be able to repair a chip or crack in your windshield on your own.
Cold weather
There are a couple of things you really shouldn’t do with your car in cold weather:
- Hot water: If your car windows are frozen, you should never ever pour hot water on them. You run the risk of causing a giant crack in your window and then you won’t be able to go for that drive you meant to go on. Plus, it’ll cost you quite a bit of money.
- Newspaper: Don’t cover your windshield with newspapers. These can end up frozen stuck to the window and you probably won’t be able to get them off again. Not very handy when you need to drive your car.
- Engine: Don’t turn on your engine before you start scraping your windows. It won’t help the scraping one bit and the only thing that happens is that you breathe in a lot of nasty chemicals.
- Handbrake: You should leave the handbrake for what it is. When it’s cold, you run the risk of it freezing stuck. Instead, you can use wheel chocks or put your car in park.
- Starting the car: Is your car having some trouble starting? Turn off all of the things that use up power, like the radio, the heating and the lights and try again. Once your car has started, you can turn all of the other things back on.

Repairing your windshield
In the video below, Chris from ChrisFix explains how to repair a small crack in your windshield in a few simple steps. He starts by cleaning the window with some glass cleaner or alcohol and a microfiber cloth. Apply the alcohol to the cloth first – don’t spray it onto the glass directly!
