How to keep wasps at bay and prevent getting stung

Tomato and mint

As we have said on the previous page, wasps are attracted to sweet smells and proteins. However, they absolutely detest the smell of the stem of tomatoes as well as the smell of fresh mint. Put a few sprigs of mint on a plate to keep wasps away.

Ground coffee

Put a little ground coffee in a heat-resistant mug or plate. Light the coffee grounds on fire. Don’t worry, the coffee will burn without a flame. Wasps don’t enjoy the smell of coffee and will therefore stay away.  You can also put some ground coffee in aluminium foil and put this on the barbecue after you are done.

Burn incense

Wasps detest smoke. So if you like incense, why not burn some to repel them? If you don’t like incense yourself, you could also try burning a citronella candle or a scented candle with the smell of lavender.

Cloves

We usually like the smell of cloves, but wasps actually don’t. You can try placing some cloves in a jar with water and you won’t see a wasp again. You can also cut a lemon in half and stick some cloves in that.

Water and coins

Fill a transparant bag with water and a lot of coins. Hang the bag in your garden in a place where the sun will shine on it. The water and coins will reflect the sun and blind the wasps. They won’t be able to see and fly the other way.

Syrup or orange juice

Wait, what? Don’t these two attract wasps? Yes, they do. However, if you fill a glass with a sweet drink such as grenadine or orange juice and put it in a remote spot of your garden, the wasps will fly over there and hopefully drown in the liquid. Cruel, yes. Effective? Also yes.

Wasp trap

Make your own wasp trap by cutting off the neck of a plastic bottle. Fill the bottle with grenadine syrup, and put the neck back in upside down, without the cap on. Wasps will smell the grenadine and fly into the trap, but because of the small hole they won’t be able to get out.
