The first important factor in keeping clover away from your lawn, is prevention. When you have a healthy lawn, clover won’t stand a chance. And that is why you always want to put in the effort to maintain your lawn and make sure your grass stands strong and healthy. According to Better Homes & Gardens, weeds won’t be able to grow when your lawn is healthy. And a healthy lawn needs healthy soil to grow. The key to healthy soil is plenty of nutrients, to keep your lawn well-drained and to provide plenty of moisture. Your lawn needs around one inch of water each week. The last thing you need to do to keep your lawn healthy, is to mow the grass frequently. The ideal length is around three inches tall. If your grass is long enough, there won’t be any space for weeds or clover to grow.
Nutrients
Usually, when you’re dealing with a white clover infestation, your lawn lacks nutrients. And the nutrient that your lawn needs, is nitrogen. If you add some extra nitrogen fertilizer to your lawn, you will notice that the grass will grow taller and wider. When you don’t want to invest in a synthetic nitrogen fertilizer, you can also use a layer of compost on your lawn to stimulate growth and rid your lawn of the infestation.
Herbicide
There are also some herbicides that can help rid your lawn of clover. And they work best if you apply them at the right time. According to Better Homes & Gardens, the perfect time to use herbicide on the clover on your lawn, is fall. Apply the herbicide in fall, when there is no rain expected and when you have not mowed your lawn yet. That is how you make sure your herbicide will be as effective as possible.
Just keep in mind that several pollinators use white clover as one of their food sources. And that means that having white clover on your lawn could also provide you with a diverse, mixed-species lawn. Turf that will have a lot of environmental benefits and turn your backyard into a lively, green space.
