The initial idea of living in an old lighthouse might seem romantic, high on a cliff with views out over the ocean. However the harsh reality of being exposed to the salty air and constant wind takes a big toll on a building. That’s something that James Fairbank has learned throughout the 35 years he’s been living inside a 19th century lighthouse. Though recently with help from his nephew the lighthouse has seen a dramatic renovation.
You’ll be amazed by it’s surprising interior, James has worked hard to turn the damp and dark building into a light and breathing home. His motivation? He wants the lighthouse to be his legacy now that his time as a resident draws to a close.
Would you be able to live in a place far from the luxuries of a city or village? No stores close by, always at mercy of the unforgiving sea? It takes a resilient kind of character to stand up to the ocean.
On the next page we’ll show you how the building has changed, and we’ve got a feeling you’ll change your mind!
