What Is a Nail House? Luo Baogen’s Stand for Fairness
A “nail house” (钉子户, dīngzihù) is a term for properties where owners refuse to sell, even when major construction projects need their land. Much like a “stubborn nail,” these homes remain while the surroundings change.
The Baogens’ case became one of China’s most iconic nail house stories. While others accepted the government’s compensation, they believed the offer was too low to replace their home. So, construction moved forward around them, making their house a striking symbol of resistance.
As images of the house amidst busy traffic went viral, it sparked debate over personal rights versus rapid development. Eventually, the Baogens accepted a new compensation offer, and their home was removed. However, the image of a lone house in the middle of a highway remains a lasting reminder of their stand.
