In the whirlwind of China’s urban transformation, one man’s home became a symbol of resilience. Luo Baogen and his wife gained global attention in 2012 when they refused to sell their home in Wenling, China, for a major highway construction project.

Most of their neighbors took the government’s compensation offer and moved out, but the Baogens held firm. Remarkably, rather than forcing them out, the authorities built the road around their two-story home, leaving it isolated in the middle of a newly constructed highway.
