Overhydration is a thing: this is how your body tells you you’re drinking too much water

overhydration

Kidneys

The problems arise when you’re drinking more than eight liters a day. Your kidneys can’t handle this much water and you can end up with water intoxication. This happens when the balance between the sodium and the water in your blood is severely disrupted.

Overhydration

You have to go pretty nuts on the water to get actual water intoxication, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be overhydrated. If you drink too much water or other fluids, your body will react to the surplus of water. If this is the case, you can experience the following symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Low blood pressure
  • Low energy
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Restlessness
  • Bad mood
