How to make sure you won’t fall

When it freezes outside and snow or rain is failing down, it can instantly become pretty slippery. Usually it is hard to see frost coming and slipping and falling is sometimes unavoidable. But with these tips you might stay on your feet a little longer when the world outside turns into a giant ice skating rink.

Walk slow and steady

Of course, the best advice would be to stay inside and wait for the ice to melt. But sometimes people have to go out. And if you can not wait to get a breath of fresh winter air, these tips could help prevent you from getting injured during your adventure. Even if you are in a hurry to get somewhere, taking it easy and slowing down your step might save you in this case. If you walk slowly, you reduce the chances of slipping. If it is very slippery, you can adjust your step to keep from falling. The proper way to walk when it is very slippery outside, is like a penguin. Take small steps without lifting your feet too high, use your arms for balance and make sure you walk with your back and head straightened.

This might look a little goofy but it can help you stay up when the ground you’re walking on is completely frozen.

Gear

If you have them, use some Nordic Walking poles when you head out. Or regular walking sticks. If you don’t have anything at hand, a strong branch could help do the trick too. As long as you have sticks with pointy ends, they’ll help you gain traction in the snow.

Another helpful piece of equipment is the kind of shoes you’re wearing. Your shoes can literally be your downfall in this case. The best choice would be a warm pair of snow boots but not everyone owns a pair of fuzzy winter boots. The important thing is to pick shoes that have a flat bottom, preferably with rubber soles. Heels are not a good option in this case. If you pick a pair of shoes with good traction, you’ll be able to walk around in the snow more effectively. Shoes to avoid are ones with soles made out of leather, nylon or crepe rubber. These are more slippery materials and won’t keep you on your feet.

So if you really need to go out, remember these tips to make sure you won’t loose your footing.
