Hair loss, also known as balding, is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It’s more common among men, but women can experience it too. By the age of 35, around two-thirds of men will have noticeable hair loss, and this number rises as they age. While genetics play a significant role in hair loss, there are ways to slow it down or prevent it.
Of all types of hair loss, male and female pattern baldness are the most common.
Causes of balding
Balding, or hair loss, can occur for various reasons. The most common type is androgenetic alopecia, often referred to as male or female pattern baldness. This condition is hereditary and can start as early as a person’s twenties or thirties. It’s caused by a sensitivity to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which shrinks hair follicles, causing thinner, weaker hair and eventually, hair loss.
Other causes of balding include hormonal changes, stress, poor nutrition, and certain medications. Hair loss can also result from underlying health conditions like thyroid problems or autoimmune diseases. Identifying the cause of hair loss is essential to prevent or treat it effectively.
