Your weight plays a role
Have you suddenly noticed hairs on your chin, or have you suddenly started to gain or lose weight? According to Elizabeth, there can be two reasons for this. “Being overweight disrupts the balance of your hormones,” she says. And it is these hormones that influence your hair growth. But not only being overweight can disrupt this balance, people who lose a lot of weight may also have to deal with it. Is the weight loss too extreme? Then very small, thin hairs can appear on the skin. This is known as lanugo.
You take certain medication
Most medication does not have the side effect of excessive hair growth, but there are of course exceptions. Heavy medication in, particular, can cause this, such as chemotherapy and certain medicines for epilepsy. There are also “medicines” that you really should not take which can cause excessive hair growth , such as anabolic steroids, which are taken illegally in certain competitive sports.
You are getting older
Lastely, excessive hair growth may not be a health-related symptom at all, it can also occur simply because we’re getting older. “It’s natural for you to get hairier as you get older, especially during menopause,” explains Elizabeth.
