Mental symptoms
When you’re completely overwhelmed by work, it makes sense that you don’t feel like doing anything, and prefer to lie lazily on the couch at home. Still, there are other symptoms that can indicate that burnout is lurking.
- Mental fatigue
- Indecision
- Mood swings
- Unable to concentrate
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Difficulty remembering things
- Feeling insecure
- Distrust
- Low self-esteem
- Cynicism
Physical symptoms
If you are exhausted, your overall physical health may suffer. This is surprising for many people, because we usually think stress is something mental. Yet, stress also causes a lot of muscle tension, which can cause a number of other problems.
- Fatigue and sleep problems
- Muscle strain
- Headaches
- Intestinal problems
- High heart rate
- Distress
- Fast breathing
Support
If you recognize these symptoms, you could be on the verge of a burnout. If so, it is important that you do not keep working at the same pace. Seek support. It can be difficult to raise this directly with your employer. That is why your doctor can be a good first point of contact.
