Frozen bread? You should definitely pay attention to this!

First of all, you should make sure that no air is ‘packed’ in. If you haven’t opened the bread package yet, you can just put it in the freezer like this. Have you already opened the bag? Then you should wrap the bread in cling film and then put it back in the bread bag before you put it in the freezer. This will keep it fresh and prevent ice crystals from forming. Of course, it also helps if you put the bread in the freezer as soon as you can. The longer you wait before freezing the bread you buy, the less good it will taste when you take it out again. Sounds logical, but many people wait too long to freeze.

How long can you leave bread in the freezer?

Of course, it is not recommended to leave bread in the freezer for months. It is true that the bread does not go bad. Nevertheless, the taste changes after months of freezing. It tends to become sticky and tasteless. It is also possible that your bread will get a so-called ‘freezer burn’ if it stays in the freezer for too long. This is the term used to describe the appearance of dried out layers of edges on the frozen food. This occurs when there are temperature fluctuations or if the packaging leaks and the food comes into contact with air.

Defrosting

There are two options: either you preheat your oven to 180 degrees and put the frozen bread in there for 10-15 minutes (and then let it cool well for 30 minutes). Or, you can just leave the bread on your cutting board in the kitchen. This way it will thaw on its own. When you do this, make sure that the bread stays in the package for that long – otherwise it will dry out. Caution: do not refreeze bread that has been frozen and thawed again!
