The homes were used during the World Cup and will now provide shelter for survivors
The earthquakes in Syria and Turkey have left many people homeless. But now, Qatar has announced that they will donate cabins and caravans that were leftover from the World Cup, to the suffering countries. That way, survivors can get much needed shelter and won’t have to sleep outside in the cold weather.
Earthquake
About a week ago, both Turkey and Syria have been hit by two massive earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.8 and 7.5. Almost 40,000 people have died and because a lot of buildings have been completely destroyed, many more people are homeless. Because shelters were filling up fast, a lot of people weren’t able to find shelter. In Turkey, around one million people have been left to sleep in the cold. And that number is believed to be even higher in Syria.
Mobile homes
Qatar is planning on sending 10,000 cabins and caravans to Turkey and Syria. The mobile homes were used during the World Cup, to accommodate the fans that came to see the event. But now, the mobile homes aren’t being used anymore. And could provide shelter for the survivors. According to the BBC, a Qatari official said: “The plans of the 2022 World Cup always intended for such temporary accommodations to be donated. However in view of the urgent needs in Turkey and Syria, we have taken the decision to ship our cabins and caravans to the region, providing much needed and immediate support to the people of Turkey and Syria.”
According to the Qatar Fund for Development, 350 structures have been send out already on Sunday. The United Arab Emirates have announced that they will donate $100 million to help the countries deal with the disaster and Saudi Arabia has sent out planes with supplies for the survivors.
