In December 2022, a 47-year-old man was working on his boat in the Antilles Islands when it was dragged out to sea with him on it. The man wasn’t able to make it back to port and he got lost. After 24 days, the man was finally saved after he survived on a diet of tomato ketchup and seasoning.

Lost

When 47-year old Elvis Francois of Dominica was trying to repair is boat, the weather suddenly changed. Francois’ boat drifted out of the port in St. Maarten and because Francois wasn’t a great navigator, he wasn’t able to find his way back. In a video that the Navy released, Francois said: “I tried to [go] back to port, but I lost track because it took me a while to mount the sail and fix the sail … I call my friends, my coworkers. They tried to contact me, but they lost service. There was nothing else I could do than sit down and wait.”

Wait

For twenty-four days he had to wait. The only thing Francois had on board with him, was a bottle of ketchup, some garlic powder and some Maggi. Francois explains: “I had no food, just a bottle of ketchup that was on the boat, garlic powder and Maggi [soup] … So, I mixed it up with some water so I had this to survive for 24 days in the sea.” During his time out on the sea, he decided to write a message on his boat, saying that he needed help. The Columbian Navy found him 120 nautical miles from Puerto Bolívar. After being rescued, Francois was taken to the hospital to receive care. But according to Colombian Army Commander Captain Carlos Urano Montes, Francois was still in good health when they found him.
