The homeless mother of two had send the dog away with a note for whoever would find her

When McKamey Animal Center received a call about a dog running around with a leash, they picked her up right away. They were surprised to find that the dog carried a note with her from her previous owner, who recently became homeless. They decided to find the owner and reunite the dog with her family.

Lost dog

Lauren Mann, director of advancement at McKamey Animal Center, took in Lilo, a puppy that had been spotted running around a neighborhood with a leash attached to it, they were surprised to find a note. She told CBS News: “We received a call from a Good Samaritan that there was a large dog running around a neighborhood and had a leash attached to it. So, our animal protection team went out and picked her up as a stray and when they put her on the truck to bring her back to the center here is when we found the note.”

According to Mann, the note read: “Please love me. My mom can’t keep me and is homeless with two kids. She tried her best but can’t get help – I cost too much for her. She really loves me and I’m a great dog and love to be loved on. Please don’t abuse me.”

Reunited

The shelter was happy to find a note with Lilo. “A shelter is not the same as a home so at the end of the day, we’d rather you keep your pet. And we’re able to do anything we can to make sure that happens,” Mann told the news channel. They posted about Lilo on their social media channel. After only 24 hours, a homeless mother of two called who turned out to be Lilo’s previous owner. So they arranged a reunion. “It was very clear when Lilo entered the room that that was her family,” Mann told CBS News. “Everyone was extremely happy, there was not a dry eye in the room. The kids were also just as excited, and emotional as everyone else.”

The animal shelter provides resources for struggling families to make sure their pets can stay with them. Mann explained: “For this family, we were working with some local agencies in town to help them find pet-friendly shelter.”
