The 82-year-old will use the money to pay for his house and to visit his children
After working hard for most of his life, Warren Marion was finally able to retire at the age of 82. This was made possible because of a fundraiser that was promoted through TikTok. Over 100,000 was raised so Marion could finally quit his full-time job at Walmart. Something he wasn’t able to do yet because of an outstanding loan for his house.
Help
When small business owner Rory McCarty was checking out some batteries at the Walmart in Maryland, he was surprised to see Warren Marion still working there. “As a business owner … I was astounded seeing this little older man still grinding. Working eight to nine hour shifts.” he explained on the GoFundMe page that he set up. According to the BBC, McCarty was inspired by a similar fundraising story that helped another Walmart employee retire. McCarty felt inclined to help Marion, who is also a US navy veteran. McCarty said on the fundraisers page that it was about helping Marion to “do the things he would love to do that he may not be able to for financial reasons.”
Success
So McCarty set up a GoFundMe page to raise money. That way, Marion would finally be able to retire. McCarty promoted his fundraiser through his TikTok account that has about 277,000 subscribers. And the fundraiser was a success: within two days, the goal of $100,000 was reached. McCarty handed over the check of $108,682 last week, leaving Marion speechless. He told the Cumberland Times News “All I can tell you is the good Lord has blessed me for what I did in my younger years,”
But it doesn’t stop there. Money kept flowing in after the target of one hundred thousand dollars was reached. Another $3,000 has been donated by over 5,700 people. That amount will alsof be given to the 82-year-old navy veteran who plans on visiting his children and grandchildren in Florida.
