We’ve been doing it wrong all this time!
The dishwasher remains a mystical object to us. We still don’t really know how you’re supposed to put your cutlery into the machine. Should the handles be up or down? We have no idea. Luckily, Lucinda Ottusch, who’s a dishwasher expert at Whirlpool, has cleared things up for us once and for all. She’s told Today what truly is the right way to load your dishwasher.
It might not be what you’d expect.
Up or down?
Most of us put our cutlery into the dishwasher with the handles facing downwards. This seems the most logical way if you want it to really get clean. Yet it isn’t the right or safest way. You can easily cut open your hand open on a sharp knife that’s facing up. Lucinda explains the best way to put in your cutlery. You should use the silverware basket and alternate the way your put in your spoons and forks. Place some of them with the handles up and some of them with the handles down. This way, all of your cutlery will get perfectly clean because none of the forks and spoons are sticking together.
Knives
Because of safety reasons it’s best to always put in knives with the handles up. Lucinda recommends washing really sharp knives by hand, because it’s safer but also because your knives will remain sharp for longer this way. The dishwasher can damage your knives.
