With these handy tips, you’ll save a lot of money when you’re doing laundry
We don’t always realise this since doing laundry is a part of our weekly or even daily life, but the costs of doing a load of laundry can be pretty high without you noticing it. An average wash costs between €0.76 and €1.11, depending on your type of washing machine and the temperature you use. If you want to save some money on a monthly basis, these seven tips on how to make washing less expensive can really help you out.
Thanks to these tips, you’ll be able to save quite some money each year.
1. Full washing machine
Okay, it sounds obvious, but it bears repeating because a lot of people still tend to disregard this advice. The most important thing when it comes to saving money on every load of laundry is to only wash when the drum is full (or, three-quarters full; never fill a washing machine to the brim). Depending on the cycle or programme you’re using, you can save 10 to 30 euros a year by following through on this tip.
2. Temperature
We already mentioned this in the introduction, but the temperature you wash your clothes on has a big influence on the costs of doing laundry as well. Washing at a high temperature costs about 18 cents while washing at a low temperature (like 30 °C) is much cheaper at 7 cents on average. It’s not always necessary to use hot cycles. Dust and smells are eliminated at 20 degrees already and most stains are removed at 30 or 40 degrees.
3. Dosing
Many people use too much laundry detergent. Not only is this bad for your washing machine, but it also makes every wash a lot more expensive. Are you having trouble determining the right dose of detergent for your laundry? Then you should follow the advice on the packaging and/or use a special detergent measuring cup.
