Start at the beginning
This tip holds true for every cleaning project in your home: start with the least aggressive method. Always try mild, natural products first before using bleach, chlorine and other aggressive products. Even vinegar, which is very acidic, can damage grout and remove the protective layer from your tiles. Often, you can do a lot with just some hot water and a brush. If that doesn’t work, you can try the following method.
What you’ll need
- A brush with tough hairs, like an old toothbrush
- Baking soda
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Dish soap
Step 1
Prepare the area you want to clean by soaking it with hot water and scrubbing the grout with a toothbrush. This will make sure you remove the filth off the surface. Follow the grout while you scrub in a circular motion. If you have a steam cleaner, this would be a good time to get it out, because it works wonders when it comes to cleaning grout.
Step 2
Time to prepare the cleaning agent. Create a paste with two parts baking soda and one part hydrogen peroxide. If you want to clean the grout in your kitchen, also add a couple of drops of dish soap to combat the grease.
Step 3
Rub the cleaning paste you’ve just made onto the tiles and grout. Make sure everything is covered and leave it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes. This way, the cleaning agent can soak into the grout, which will give the best and shiniest result.
Step 4
Start scrubbing away! Use the toothbrush to scrub clean the grout and to remove the filth from the pores.
Step 5
Rinse the tiles with warm water. Add a few drops of dish soap to the water and use a clean sponge or cloth to wipe clean the tiles and grout.
Keep it clean
The best way to keep your bathroom tiles and grout clean and white is to use a grout sealer. You can use this to cover the pores of the grout and keep out dirt this way. Do make sure that your tiles and grout have been dry for at least 24 hours before you apply the grout sealer. Also, always use a squeegee in your bathroom to make sure the tiles remain lime-free.
