For years he has been a regular on television: Dr. Phil McGraw knows how to make the most high-profile television and can’t seem to get away from TV. But before he appeared on TV with the familiar bald head and bushy mustache, he created a furor as “Mr. Tackle” on his school’s football team. Do you recognize him again?

You wouldn’t know it when you see him, but “doctor” Phil McGraw is now 73 years old. He may blow out 74 candles in September, but aside from a slightly grayer haircut, he still looks exactly like the Dr. Phil we know from the zeroes. In the late 1990s, McGraw was a regular on the Oprah Winfrey Show, and the legendary talk show host eventually helped him launch his own show. Indeed, in addition to Dr. Phil himself, Oprah Winfrey is also an executive producer of the show Dr. Phil.

Finally in 2002, Phil McGraw made his first appearance on the tube in/as Dr.Phil. Since then, the show has basically always been on television. By the way, it may soon be entering its final season. In fact, the show was renewed in 2018 for four seasons, which would bring it to an end in May 2023. Anyway, who knows, maybe Hollywood will drag out a last-minute renewal for the famous doctor.

Or well, doctor? There is quite a bit of controversy surrounding this title. Although the title of the show Dr. Phil suggests that McGraw is a medical professional, and he is seen by many people as a real therapist, the truth is different.
Dr. Phil once earned a Ph.D in clinical psychology from North Texas State University. However, his license as a psychologist has now long since expired. Moreover, the rule in the United States is that a license in one state is not immediately valid for another state as well. So since McGraw did not obtain his license in the state of California, where he lives and where the show is taped, he is not actually a doctor. Then again, according to California authorities, he does not need to have a license because he is “not practicing psychology” in the show.
